Pestilence Confronted: Stay Calm and Carry On

This week we are learning that our dear brothers and sisters in Europe are experiencing new and large outbreaks of Covid. My country, the USA, is also seeing new positive tests of the pestilence. Two things we know:

  1. This highly infectious virus is hard to predict;
  2. Covid will not be stopped by clever government action or non-action, only a vaccine will slow and stop its negative impact.

Therefore, until we have a vaccine we must follow common sense and  guidelines from our national health professionals to keep ourselves safe, and also follow God’s guideline to keep ourselves calm. What are God’s guidelines? You may know the famous British saying: “stay calm and carry on.” I think God’s guidelines are like this saying, only more comforting for those of us with faith in God. The prophet Isaiah writes (Isaiah 57:15 ESV):

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up,

who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:

“I dwell in the high and holy place,

and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,

to revive the spirit of the lowly,

and to revive the heart of the contrite.”

We all know that a vaccine will be found and widely distributed around the world. In the USA we are told this vaccine will be in use by year-end. Until then “stay calm and carry on” by seeking God’s will for you at this time. The Lord is looking to revive people who are “of a contrite (repentant) and lowly (humble) spirit (disposition).”
