Pestilence Confronted: Bearing Fruit in the Midst of Covid

The effects of Covid are not clear and evident. By this I mean that we are more impacted by the fears, concerns and anxieties of the people we meet, live with and work with than we acknowledge. Just going about one’s daily life during Covid, has become a serious exercise in staying positive. In my own country, the USA, the political temperature continues to heat up partially due to what I call “Covid anxiety.” This anxiety stems from uncertainty about the future brought on by “Covid” induced conditions.

So given this reality: How shall I as a Christ-follower, exhibit the fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self-control) which St. Paul describes as “to live by the Spirit” and “to walk by the Spirit?” (study Galatians 5:16-25) How shall I overcome “Covid anxiety” and bear “fruit” and especially fruit of the Spirit?

At the “last supper” Jesus told his Apostles: “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:4-5)

“Abide” is a rich word evoking a picture of a deep and mutually accepting relationship; two who go together. If Jesus tells his closest companions to “abide” then it must be entirely possible to do so. This is the way to bear “fruit” even in the midst of a pandemic. For me, it begins with a desire to bear fruit; it begins with a passion to abide in Christ who is the vine.
