Pestilence Confronted: "…Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves." | CBMC International
Pestilence Confronted: “…Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”

Pestilence Confronted: “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”  Matthew 10:16

We should not be surprised that people all around us are acting oddly and becoming more unsettled and anxious. The Covid virus has upset most things and brought uncertainty about the future. This can be quite troubling to people because they find meaning and purpose from the world, its comforts and routines. They count on them, they strive for them and they put their faith and trust in them. Clearly their faith in these things has now been shaken by the Covid pestilence. In contrast, Christ-followers put their faith and trust in God and His unshakable kingdom.

When Jesus sent out his apostles to tell the people “the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 10) he said he was sending them out as “sheep among wolves” and therefore they should be careful to be “wise as serpents and innocent (gentile) as doves.” Jesus knew the hearts and intentions of men and women, and warned his apostles they would be persecuted for speaking about Jesus and the gospel. St. Paul called them a “crooked and twisted generation” and warned the Philippians to:

“Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.” (Philippians 2:14-16)

This holy wisdom is fully applicable today as we try to be ministers and ambassadors of Christ in the marketplace, in a world filled with confusion and pestilence.

Blessings,
Jim Firnstahl
